Take a Stand Against Your Desk, Its So Old School...

Take a Stand Against Your Desk, Its So Old School... News flash:  desks with standard chairs are old news. If youve been on LinkedIn recently, chances are youve been bombarded with videos and images of  the new in-thing standing desks. But I witnessed something on LinkedIn that has changed my outlook on desks forever: Chuck away your Ikea  PÃ…HL desk, and invest in something thats wheelie going to effect your health and wellbeing. A giant hamster wheel. All jokes aside, in recent years, people have really started noticing  the negative effects of sitting at a desk all day. And its true a study conducted by the AMA (American Medical Association) found that sitting for extended periods of time can be bad for your health. So  my office chair can kill? There are many effects that sitting down all day can have on your body. There are the noticeable ones such as a stiff neck, a slower metabolism and weight gain. But there are numerous more shocking implications that staying seated can bring (source) : Sitting at a desk all day can nearly double your risk of having a heart attack. Now thats some serious stuff. It can increase your risk of diabetes a lifelong, serious condition. “For people who sit most of the day, their risk of heart attack is about the same as smoking.” ~ Martha Grogan, Cardiologist, Mayo Clinic Obese people sit for 2.5 more hours than slim people. Modes of attack: If youre desk chair is out to kill, its important you fight back with equal measures. Here are some minor changes that can help you ensure youre chair doesnt harm your health: Mini: Leave your desk once an hour for 5 minutes. Youll not only energise your body, but youll reinvigorate your mind, too. Adjust your chair to a 135degree angle. This will take the strain off your neck. Interrupt your sitting whenever you can. Just get moving. Take the stairs whenever you can to get in that physical exercise. Have very frequent water breaks. Medium: Arrange sports days or initiatives at work to encourage movement. Why not start a Thursday evening 5-aside footie team? Ditch the cramped commute and cycle/walk to work. Introduce walking meetings instead of sitting around in a cramped meeting room, stretch those legs and get the team out on a walk around the block whilst you do your meeting. Massive: Invest in standing desks for your office. they may be expensive but theyll change productivity in your office forever. Build a giant hamster wheel to walk in whilst you work. Host an annual sports day and get your team active! Great for health and also team building. Make healthy swaps, such as swapping out the office biscuits for a bowl of fruit (probably the most outrageous suggestion on this list.) 10 Twitter Tips to Find Your New Job

10 Twitter Tips to Find Your New Job We’ve given you Twitter, perhaps the most talked about social media site of the moment. Although Twitter is arguably perceived as being more about socialising than professional networking, it is still a hugely valuable tool for businesses, professionals-and job seekers. Here are 10 tips for using Twitter to get a job. 1. Fill in your bio You only have 160 characters for your bio, so make them count. Make it clear what you want and what value you can bring, i.e. “As a qualified social worker for x years, Im currently looking for a position in a y type of organisation”. See How to Write a Twitter Bio for more on this topic. 2. Use a real photo of yourself It’s important to upload a photo on your Twitter profile and it’s just as important that it’s a photo of yourself. As hilarious as putting up a photo of a cat in a bow tie or Simon Cowell is, it doesn’t look very professional in the eyes of potential employers looking at your profile. 3. Follow the relevant people Obviously if you’re using Twitter to tap into a certain job role, organisation, career or industry, it’s useful to follow tweeters associated with your target areas. There are a number of Twitter applications and directories that can help you find people in particular fields. The most established, popular and recommended one is Twellow. 4. Connect with people Following people who could be beneficial to your job search won’t be of any help if they don’t know you’re there! Connect with potentially useful contacts by replying to their tweets, following tweeted links to their blog posts and leaving comments, and also tweeting them any thoughts or links that they might find interesting. 5. Tweet smartly Once you’re interacting with people on Twitter and have some followers that are really listening to you, it becomes increasingly important that you tweet smartly. If you’re using Twitter as part of your job search this means giving off a professional vibe. You may only have 140 characters with which to tweet, but it’s still important to be interesting, avoid major controversy and to use correct spelling and grammar. 6. Offer your help This is an important part of connecting with people and being a smart tweeter: You can show both your authenticity and your ability to fellow users by offering your help to them, be it by answering a question, voting on a poll, or even sending them a book that they’re looking for and that you have. Giving assistance by using your career expertise in particular will of course demonstrate your viability as a job candidate. 7. Ask for help If people are asking for help, that of course means that you can also ask for help, especially if you’re looking for a job. Asking for help doesn’t necessarily mean coming across as desperate: it can be as simple and understated as asking a journalist who writes about your particular industry if they know of any organisations that are hiring soon. 8. Don’t spam Unfortunately, as Twitter is such a popular platform, it does get its fair share of spammers. Even if you’re not intentionally spamming, other tweeters can be so sensitive to spam as to label you as a spammer and block/report you. It’s one thing to ask for help from a variety of connections on a variety of job seeking issues, but if you repeatedly address exactly the same question/request to the particular person or to the whole of Twitter, you may become a spam suspect. 9. Be cautious Speaking of spam, if you do get a tweet or DM (Direct Message) from someone you haven’t been interacting with, or have never been told about, and they offer you a dream job opening, be wary. Ask yourself if what they’re saying is too good to be true and why the offer has come out of the blue. Be careful not to click on any links you don’t trust, as these can often be the main tool of phishing scams. Just as there can be non-existent, questionable, or even illegal jobs disguised as legit positions on listings websites, they can also appear on Twitter and other similar forms of social media. 10. Preserve your Twitter reputation Spamming is just one way of ruining your reputation. As your online reputation as a job seeker is very important, be sure to also avoid swearing, lying, posting inappropriate photos, being rude, pestering famous (or any) tweeters and tweeting drunk. Now that you have taken these steps youre ready to check out the list of 140 companies tweeting fresh jobs. 4 Career Decisions That Highly Successful People Make - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

4 Career Decisions That Highly Successful People Make - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career As I become more experienced and more successful in business, Ive begun to realize that most successful people dont make a lot of money because they are lucky or because they know the right people. Nor do I believe that people are simply born destined to become wealthy. Rather, Ive come to recognize that many of these individuals make highly intelligent career decisions that lead them to get where they are. Here are 4 of those: 1. Birds of feather become successful together Highly successful people surround themselves with others just like them.   They know that we are a product of our environment and wealthy individuals go out of their way to only do business with others who are hard working and effective at what they do. They have a keen ability to read people (a.k.a size them up) and determine whether that person is worth working for and/or doing business with or whether they are not the real deal. This knack for accurately judging others leads them to become employed at top companies that provides career growth and intellectual stimulation. 2. Highly successful people have learned how to effectively deal with others When I first started my business, I was highly ambitious, but very poor in forming positive interpersonal business relationships and that put a strain on my ability to get to the next level in business. It may have taken some time, but Ive come to the realization that success can not exist in a vacuum; we need the work and motivation of others to achieve goals that are above and beyond the capabilities of a single person. Lets take two great examples: Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.   Both are known for their technical savvy and innovative minds, though rarely do people mention their ability to manage and lead others in business. Surely, it took more than one person to design, develop, manufacture, market, package and wholesale the iPhone. 3. Highly successful people dont feel the need to convince others that they are good at what they do nor do they over promise results that they cant deliver I have this competing company in the staffing industry that spends 300 pages of their website attempting to convince potential clients how great they are and they end up looking just the opposite. Successful people know that other likeminded individuals can smell b.s. and rather than drawn in, they are turned off by overly arrogant candor.   Instead, they carry themselves with a demeanor that is self-confident on the inside and humble on the outside. 4. Highly successful people strive to be great, but come to terms with the fact that they are not perfect It may have taken me 31 years to learn, but Ive come to grips with the reality that I cant control every situation nor will I ever be perfect. Highly paid individuals know that they are bound to win some and bound to lose some.   When they win, they celebrate and anticipate more positive results and, when they lose they are able to bounce back with an uncanny resiliency and energy a.k.a. successful people dont beat themselves up mentally for mistakes that may be out of their control. In the End Next time youre around others who have high paying jobs and who are successful both in business and in interpersonal relationships, look closely at some of the traits they have and the decisions they make and you should see some striking similarities. What Is a Skilled Resume Sample?

What Is a Skilled Resume Sample?A skilled resume sample will give you a head start in the world of being a job candidate, but it can be easy to miss some important points. It is possible that there are a number of jobs for which you will not qualify, and there will be other factors that you may not be aware of that will limit your choices.Candidates should be familiar with what is required of them when they apply for jobs. The most commonly asked questions may relate to things such as language proficiency, qualifications, skills, and experience. There are a number of websites on the Internet that can provide a list of questions, but you should also consult a number of sources before going into this step. For example, employers will probably ask you if you have any experience in the field that you are applying for, and if so, how long ago was it? Many companies will also expect to see past work history, but they may also require more detailed information about your previous positions. The reason that these factors are important is that they may be of assistance to the interviewer and the hiring manager when it comes to determining how much responsibility you can handle, and whether or not you have shown good judgment during your previous employment. It is also advisable to be familiar with the contents of the website, as it will provide you with the basis for a skilled resume sample. While there are many other elements to consider, this should be a major part of your application. This will show the employer how you are likely to handle the duties required for the position that you are looking for. It is always best to be fully prepared for any interview that you may receive, and a sample is a good way to ensure that you are as prepared as possible.A skilled resume sample should also highlight your education and training. Many applicants who have taken an interview are concerned about how they are going to get past any red flags that may be associated with their ed ucation and training. In most cases, this is perfectly reasonable, but employers also want to be sure that you have learned enough about the work that you will be doing before you even apply for the job. These examples should show them that you have the ability to learn on the job and are truly equipped to perform the tasks required.Another thing that skilled sample resumes often include is a list of references. While it is generally considered rude to provide references, in this instance it can be helpful to provide the employer with contact information for your previous supervisors and colleagues. Not only will this help with your qualifications, but it will also help them to make a decision on whether or not you will be a good fit for the job.It should be noted that not all employers need to see professional certifications, but these types of information may be necessary for some positions. This is especially true when you are applying for positions in the health care industry. I f you have experience in the medical field, you may also be asked for references from your physician. Again, this is important because it can help to demonstrate to the employer that you have done your research, and it will be a positive factor when it comes to your application. When it comes to a skilled resume sample, the goal is to help you prepare for the next step of the process, which is actually getting an interview. The Internet provides you with a large selection of job opportunities, but there are also many other factors that you must consider.

Going green at Google - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Going green at Google - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Data centers like the ones run by Google, Amazon, Microsoft and others consume huge amounts of energy and Google is taking the lead in making sure that the energy is renewable: Google is the most aggressive [tech company] in advancing a clean energy agenda, analysts say. Google has made 15 wind and solar investments totalling more than $1 billion. About 34 percent of Googles operations are powered by renewable power. Thats through a combination of renewable resources that are in the utility areas that we operate, as well as the direct power procurements that weve done, he said. Our goal is to be 100 percent renewable powered. I respect Google greatly for this attitude. I also think that its one way for a company to make their employees a little happier at work. If you know that your workplace is actively working to minimize their ecological footprint or even to make the world a better place, that can bring a sense of pride and meaning to your work. The poster boy in this area is of course Patagonia, who have committed their entire operation to improving the environment and donate 10% of their profits to environmental causes every year. But because of the BS Ive had to put up with, as well as a recent conversation that I had with a client, I started wondering: What are you worrying about thats beyond your control? Dont even think about how youre not going to worry about it, or how to make it in your control. Just stick with the basics in identifying it. Once you have, leave your answer in the comments section. Ill be there too we can all take deep breaths together.
